Two WCA Seniors Receive Full Rides

By Senior Evie Fordham

wesleyanWake Christian Academy seniors Kayla Lavan and Trey Russell have both been accepted to North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount and received the John & Charles Wesley Heritage Scholarship. This is a full scholarship, so they won’t have to pay tuition, room, or board! Only twenty-five students received this competitive award.

Neither had begun their senior year expecting to commit to NC Wesleyan, especially Trey, who had been planning on attending Liberty University since his junior year, but each felt like it was God’s plan to open up a way for them to attend college for free.

Both students say that they most likely would never have looked into NC Wesleyan enough to see what a great fit it was for them if not for the on-site acceptance day the college held at Wake Christian. The two were accepted “on the spot,” in Kayla’s words.

She says, “I had absolutely no intention of going to Wesleyan when I signed up for the on-site acceptance… basically because I didn’t know anything about it… It’s crazy how God works. He knew that NC Wesleyan is the college for me and certainly proved it to me.”

The full ride that the college offered the seniors definitely got their attention, and soon after that Kayla and Trey toured its campus.

Trey reported, “After touring the campus I really enjoyed the small college atmosphere, and NC Wesleyan had the same amount of opportunities to get involved as a larger campus. I am excited for college in general, but especially excited for the chance to thrive in smaller classes and to make relationships with great people.”

Kayla added, “Now I am incredibly excited about going to NC Wesleyan. The campus is beautiful, and I love the small and friendly atmosphere there… The school is quickly expanding, and I’m excited about all the new opportunities that will be available next year.”

Not only were Kayla and Trey given full rides, but they were also accepted into the Honors College, which Kayla described as “a small group of academically motivated students, about twenty-five in total.”

She further explained, “Each honors student is required to complete honors classes and participate in certain activities. As a senior, honors students are required to complete a thesis project with the assistance of one of the professors.”

Kayla and Trey also look forward to the Christian environment the college offers. Trey said, “NC Wesleyan has many Christian organizations and a chapel on campus, and I plan on getting involved with one of these.”

Trey is also one of the sixteen juniors and seniors that returned recently from the second annual Wake Christian Academy Mission Trip to Guatemala (he also went on the first school-sponsored mission trip to Mexico), so he is especially enthusiastic about NC Wesleyan’s mission trip opportunities.

Additionally, Trey desires to someday use the Pre-Med Biomedical Science major he plans on obtaining from the college in mission work. Kayla too plans on majoring in Biomedical Science, but she will “focus on Pre-Vet” and minor in psychology.

Kayla and Trey eagerly anticipate their days at NC Wesleyan, and their Wake Christian family is confident they will represent the school well there!
