Four Wake Christian high school students recently served as pages in the State House — rising seniors Brooke Capps and Mia Perry, rising junior Skylar Teague, and rising sophomore Kylee Perry. Pages, who are typically students, are appointed by the Speaker of the House and for a week assist lawmakers as well as learn more about governmental processes. Sisters Mia and Kylee, who have both attended Wake Christian since kindergarten, spoke about their experiences.

“My mom was a page when she was my age so that’s how we knew about it,” explained Mia, “She said it was a good experience, and she wanted us to do it, so we got the chance to this year!”

The sisters both found they enjoyed the challenges of being a House page. Mia said, “My favorite part about being a page was definitely going into session. It was really interesting hearing about all the different bills and laws that they wanted to pass.”

Mia even witnessed a veto override and stated, “My representative told me we were there a very good week because it would be exciting with all the bills on the calendar, and he was right.”

Mia and Kylee also felt that they were stretched during their week as pages.

“I mainly built social skills,” said Kylee, “Through the week, I shook many powerful hands and spoke to representatives about their job and the role they play in our government.”

Mia added, “Being a page really works on your people skills. You meet a lot of people, talk to a lot of people, and do things for a lot of people, even if it’s just filling up their cup with water. You have to have a lot of patience because you may be in session for a long time.”

She continued, “So in the future if I ever do something similar to what I was exposed to during that week, I will know to have a lot of patience and always speak my opinion because it does affect the state and the people who live here, and we want the best for North Carolina since it is our home.”

Despite its challenges, the girls would wholeheartedly suggest to their peers that they pursue being pages, too. Mia said, “I would definitely recommend this to others because you get to see a major part of how the government works. You also will get to hear a lot of different opinions and learn a lot about North Carolina and how the laws are made.”

Kylee plans to be a page again her junior year. She stated, “A person may only be a House Page once, so next year I plan to serve as a Senate Page. I want to page again because I really enjoyed learning how the legislation process worked and being able to work in it.”

Mia concluded, “I would definitely recommend it. It was a great experience and a lot of fun!”
