Barrett

Dr. Barrett Martin, WCA Class of ’05, was the guest speaker for the Opening Convocation at Barton College on Tuesday, August 25. Barrett shared with the students some of his memories as a baseball player at Barton. He also encouraged the students to make the most of their time in college by getting involved with activities, studying smarter not harder to maintain strong academics, and preparing for a successful career after college. Dr. Douglas Searcy, President of Barton College, thanked Barrett for relating such practical information to the students.

Barrett grew up in Willow Springs, North Carolina and attended WCA K5 through 12th grade. While at Wake Christian, Barrett was involved in Student Council, Chorale, Beta Club, and participated in football, basketball, and baseball. Barrett was also the winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award for the state of North Carolina. He was named Student of the Year for his graduating class. After graduating from WCA, he attended Barton College where he was a catcher for the baseball team. One week after graduating from Barton, he married his lovely wife, Meredith, who also graduated from Barton. They moved to Birmingham, Alabama for Barrett to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. Barrett graduated with Honors in 2013. He currently practices at Johnson Optometric Associates with offices in Fuquay and Garner. Meredith is the JV volleyball coach and assistant Varsity volleyball coach here at WCA. Barrett and Meredith are the proud parents of a beautiful one-year-old daughter, Lucy.
