STEM Week: Humpty Dumpty Falls for Second Grade

The second-grade classes assigned to design a contraption that would protect Humpty Dumpty during his upcoming great fall took their responsibilities very seriously.  Having already learned how potential and kinetic energy works with gravity, the students knew they must protect their egg from an untimely scramble.

Anything from cotton products, diapers, socks, packing peanuts, cardboard boxes, styrofoam, balloons and grocery bag parachutes were used to soften the fall of our yolky friend(s). Unfortunately, little Humpty didn’t survive all 30+ falls at 12 and 15 feet high but remarkably, he did survive most of them!

On days 4 and 5, teams returned to the “wall” (aka football bleachers) with safer designs. Everyone celebrated successes with cheers, applause and high-fives. It was so much fun!
