AST_3378-1_copy[1]Media center specialist Kristine Dement is naturally curious. She wanted to learn more “about people and how the human mind thinks,” so she earned her bachelor’s in psychology from Michigan State University in 1998. That same year, she married her husband Glen, and a year after that they moved to Raleigh.

She was a stay-at-home mom to her daughter Leigh, born in 2000, until she enrolled her in kindergarten at Wake Christian Academy. Mrs. Dement joined the Wake Christian family that year too as a librarian, after earning her Master of Library Science from North Carolina Central University in 2006.

“I knew I wanted to be a librarian after I was spending so much time in the library figuring out what I wanted to do for a career,” Mrs. Dement said.

She has worked at Wake Christian for ten years now and has made many memories with students and other faculty members. For example, she and her fellow media center specialist, Patricia Mooney, comb the Wake County Public Library book sale each year to enhance Wake Christian’s collection.

“This year we paid $24 for an encyclopedia set currently selling for $1,147 on Amazon,” she said.

In addition to working as a media center specialist, Mrs. Dement runs a bed and breakfast marketing company called Bed and Breakfast Blogging. She loves watching classic movies, playing Scrabble, and crafting with her family, as well as cheering on the MSU Spartans.

Mrs. Dement cherishes being able to boost students’ interest in reading.

“Some of the most rewarding aspects of my job are finding book series that reluctant readers end up loving,” she said.

Most importantly, she loves that she can encourage students in their Christian walks.

“I am thankful that I work in a Christian school where we are able to talk about God and growing in our faith,” she said, “I encourage students to follow God and pursue the dreams He has given them.”
