10:15-11:15 Session 2 – Using Time-outs When You Really Want to Cut a Switch

As a teacher, knowing how to handle conflicts will be one of your most important responsibilities in your classroom. Conflict resolution exists in all aspects of our lives, even in fairy tales. Fairy tales are loaded with conflict: the Big Bad Wolf destroys the pigs’ property, Cinderella is mistreated by her stepmother, and Goldilocks breaks into the bears’ house. The question we must answer is this: “How do you handle conflict?” Identifying your own predominant style(s) of handling conflict is an important step in this process. In any classroom, conflict will always exist, but it is very important to seek resolution rather than to contain the issues and forget about them. This workshop teaches how to analyze conflict situations in the classroom and how to develop strategies that can be used to intervene in a professional manner.

11:15-12:00 Lunch (provided by Wake Christian Academy)
Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions.

12:00- 1:00- Session 3– Math Fun with Music, Movement, and Munchies

These playful, hands-on preschool math activities will help preschoolers get acquainted with numbers, counting, patterns, and more. Preschool students love learning with tactile materials like popsicle sticks, paper shapes, and coins – which makes these math activities just what the preschool teacher ordered.

Speaker: Dr. Cathy Dotson, Elementary Principal, Wilmington Christian Academy

1:00-2:00 – Ready, Set, Go: Kindergarten Readiness

Imperative to the transition from preschool to kindergarten are certain skill sets and abilities. This session explores the educational foundations necessary for a child’s first year in school.
