In The Paint with Coach Green – November 10, 2016

coach-greenCoach Green’s Blog

November 10, 2016

Hi, welcome to my blog.  I’m John Green “Coach Green” . I am very Blessed and honored to be the new men’s head varsity basketball coach at WCA, especially as we are celebrating our 50th anniversary.  What a great time to be a Bulldog!  A little bit about me, I’m married to the love of my life and we have two incredible children Anna and John IV.  You’ll meet them in a later blog post.  I’m going into my 3rd year coaching at WCA, the past 2 years as an assistant to Coach Underwood. I want to thank Chris for giving me that opportunity.  My assistant coach is Randy Bell.  Coach Bell and I have been coaching together for 9+ years.  Before coming to WCA I was the head coach at GRACE Christian School in Raleigh for 11 years (3 years as the middle school head coach and then 8 years as the high school varsity head coach).  During that time we led two varsity teams to the NCISAA state tournament, one NCISAA All-State selection and 3 conference championships.  Several of our former players have played in college or are playing in college now.

This blog is the first in a series for our upcoming season.  Over the coming weeks I will be blogging about team building, my personal philosophy on building a successful basketball program, our team focus on leadership both on and off of the court

But first a little update on where we are to date.  We have had a great offseason.  We have new and returning players in our program.  We’ve worked really hard over the spring, summer and fall sessions.  During the quite period of spring and fall our skill development was player led by our captains PJ Savage, Dequan Lockamy and Andrew Carroll.  Then during the summer session we were able to do a combination at individual skill development as well as team development.  We’ve made incredible strides in a short period of time but still have lots of work ahead of us.  As a team we have already started to demonstrate one of our goals to develop as a team – focusing on helping others -by volunteering at the Miracle League of the Triangle. What an awesome life inspiring experience for our players and our coaches!  As a team we have completed our first round of tryouts and are preparing for a 12-team jamboree at Clinton High School on Saturday November 12.   While we always want to win our goal for the jamboree is play and compete as hard as we possibly can, identify areas where we need to focus more attention and all-around work out the kinks before our first regular season game at Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point on November 29.  We then open our home schedule on Tuesday December 6 at 7:15 against Bethel Christian. We hope to see a lot of WCA fans at our games.

In a later blog I will explain our definition of success and the steps we are taking to achieve success.  Regardless of the outcome of any game we will always give all of the Thanks and Glory to the Lord.  He has Blessed our young men with incredible talents and gifts, an incredible facility to play and practice in and a platform to represent Him.  So it is our responsibility, to take care of that facility, work as hard as possible to develop those talents and to Praise him for all that He has Blessed us with.

Words do not describe how much we appreciate all of the support from Bulldog nation.  We encourage everyone faculty, students, parents and alumni to come out cheer and have a great time.  I promise you we will compete as hard as possible. We have some incredible plans for in-game activities and giveaways.   All we ask is that you cheer and support us as hard as possible.  Let’s have a great season and How Bout Them Dogs!
